The legend of Troy inspires this painting in which we see the burning city reduced to ruins in the background. In the soldier’s fixed gaze hangs the weight of resignation and inevitable loss….. the degradation of war….. the remains of a prince’s folly and a king’s ego. Here in this painting, the observer decides if the soldier is Greek or Trojan. In either case, this was not the end of his journey. From this epic legend of Homer’s Iliad, arose a multitude of mythical tales, further inspiration to endless paintings and sculpture.
